Planning a road trip with you and your canine companion ? Make sure you're both traveling safely. Pups traveling in a car should be in a crate. Wire crates are the best for car travel because they're cooler and you can reach in and pet your puppy.
Some dog owners prefer to use a wire barrier that's placed behind the front seats in the car instead of a crate. This way they don't wind up with their puppies in their laps if they have to stop suddenly.
You can also keep your puppy safe in the car with a special harness that attaches to the seatbelt to keep the puppy secure in case you're ever in an accident or have to stop suddenly. Owners of very large dogs often prefer this type of attachment.
Never leave your puppy alone in the car. Aside from the obvious risk of someone stealing your puppy, locked cars are like ovens if the weather is warm. A dog can suffer heatstroke in a car in a matter of minutes. Don't risk this. Take a friend with you when you're traveling with your puppy in case you have to get out of the car. Plan to eat at drive-through restaurants or pack some food for the trip. Pack a picnic and stop at a park or rest stop. This way, you can take your puppy for a walk on its leash, so it can stretch its legs and relieve itself.
